Updates on Hurricane Irene and Canceled Events (Updated 8/28, 10:00 a.m.)

The university is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Irene, which may affect our region on Saturday, August 27, our official “move-in” day for new and returning students. In anticipation of possible adverse conditions on Saturday, the university will open the residence halls one day early so that students will have the option of moving in on Friday, August 26.

Due to the weather, several scheduled events and activities over the weekend have been rescheduled or canceled. The list below will continue to be updated:

 

Biostatistics Center:
All systems are operational at The Biostatistics Center

 

Saturday, August 27:
G-Dub First Night – canceled
RHA Target promotional event – canceled
Volleyball:

  • 11 a.m.: GW vs George Mason – confirmed
  • 1 p.m.: American vs Georgetown – confirmed
  • 5 p.m.: American vs George Mason – canceled
  • 7 p.m.: GW vs Georgetown – canceled

Sunday, August 28:
Allied in Pride Welcome Back Social – canceled
College Democrats event – canceled
Freshman Convocation – postponed until Sunday, Sept. 11
Fresh on the Yard – canceled
Health Information Technology classes at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus – canceled
Kappa Sigma Welcome Back BBQ – canceled
Movie on the Yard – canceled
OAR Legacy Family Welcome Reception – canceled
Phi Kappa Psi Chapter Meeting – canceled
Phi Sigma Sigma Back to School BBQ – canceled
Retreat Planning Meeting – canceled

Events on the National Mall:

Transportation:
Amtrak and USDOT report that all rail service south of Washington D.C. has been cancelled from Friday through Sunday, due to expected impact from Hurricane Irene.  Amtrak will make further announcements regarding service as the storm progresses.
